A new political system (proposal)
We currently elect representatives to represent our political interests. The idea being, we elect someone who we think will write laws and vote for things that will be good for us. In theory, if the majority of the people vote for a person, that person’s ideals are in sync with the people who voted them in. Rather than every person needing to keep up with all the goings-on in their capitol, they can let their representatives handle it. The process of getting every citizen to vote for every possible bill and motion is too expensive and is best left to our elected officials to handle. That last sentence is not true. It is quite possible, and cost effective, to run a digital election where every citizen could vote on everything. Nevermind how, just assume that we can run a fair digital election. With a voting system like this, the need for elected representatives is nil (except for some high offices). Now, the burden of voting on everything is too much for the average citizen, so people can delegate their votes to…say it with me…representatives. But representatives do not get your vote for everything, just what you want them to vote for. We call these people now “special interests.” You can change my representative at any time and you can have many representatives. For example, I may be a pro-life, anti-gun, pro-healthcare person, and I could either find some group which will cover all these combinations, or I could delegate votes to several different organizations who will vote for issues in the way I want. The need for this is that there is not a single person, except for myself, who will vote the way I want on every issue. And even if this person existed, they wouldn’t be right for everyone, and certainly not the majority of the people. People vote for candidates for a single issue (like abortion), without regard for any other political position. This would allow people to take a stance on their issue without requiring them to accept everything from that parties platform. Discuss…
